Pachyderm is a web-based, index-based system for creating, storing and accessing electronic mail and news. For information on logging in to Pachyderm or acquiring a Pachyderm account, please read "Getting Started".

Pachyderm is a web-based application. You interact with Pachyderm through your web browser. The browser communicates with the Pachyderm web server over the Internet (or an intranet) using HTTP. The Pachyderm server keeps all of your non-volatile state: messages, labels, and composition drafts. The server maintains a full-text index of your messages, enhanced by "labels" that you can add to messages. You access your messages solely by issuing queries that are matched against this index. There are several different Pachyderm client interfaces: a Java applet, plain old HTML, and a WML client available from WAP-enabled devices.

Pachyderm is designed to exist in an open, standard environment. All its communication is done with standard protocols: HTTP, SMTP, POP-3 and NNTP. Pachyderm supports RFC 822 messages and has integrated MIME support (designed to work well even over low bandwidth links). Please read our vision statement and the project summary. If you have questions about Pachyderm, please send us email.
